Red Eyes

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Richard Romando The eye is a sensitive but strongly built organ. Like everything made of flesh and blood, it is also subject to some problems, most of which are the byproducts of modern lifestyles. But advances in eye health care more than make up for the harmful effects, and today people have a much better chance of retaining their vision into old age. The eye is a sensor that converts the reflected light from an object into a signal that the brain uses to identify the image. Red eye, or its various other names like pink eye, bloodshot eye, conjuctival injection and scleral injection, is a symptom of various conditions that the eye is subjected to. When the blood vessels on the surface of the sclera dilate or enlarge, the white of the eye turns different shades of red. The degree of redness is no indication of its seriousness. A bloodshot eye may be a simple allergy that will go away over a short time, or a persisting slight redness can be a warning for an emergency. A bout of coughing or straining can cause very red eyes, but needs no treatment. Exposure to dust foreign particles, chemicals and toxins require some form of cleaning and soothing solutions. Redness due to any penetrating injury should be attended to by a physician. Allergies, common cold and fever need to be treated to get rid of red eye. There are bacterial and viral infections that cause red eye, with inflammation, pain and discharge. Bacterial infection of the eyelids causing itching and redness of the eye is called blepharitis. Conjunctivitis can be a viral or bacterial infection, or caused by allergy. This affects the thin membrane covering the sclera and the eyelids. This condition is contagious, and necessary precautions have to be taken to prevent the spread. Bacterial or viral infections can cause ulcers on the cornea and make the eyes red. Uvetis or iritis are infections of the middle eye, sometimes caused by autoimmune problems or infections. Many a serious problem to this vital organ can be prevented by adopting simple measures like wearing goggles in hazardous areas, or using a soothing eye wash when exposed to dust. Eyes provides detailed information on Eyes, Dry Eyes, Red Eyes, Puffy Eyes and more. Eyes is affiliated with Eyeglass Lenses. Planning A Wedding? Tips On How To Attend A Bridal Show

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Charity Plaster If youre getting married, a Bridal Show is a great place to get started. Since 1996, I have attended or participated in over 150 Bridal Shows, and I thought I would pass on some tips to you, to make your trip a little easier. You can find local Bridal Shows being held anywhere from malls to hotels, convention centers and wedding facilities. You can expect to see anywhere from 10 to over 100 wedding vendors, and every single one of them is competing for your business. What to do? How to start? What to bring? If possible, find out which vendors will be participating in the show before you attend. This will help you map out your plan of attack. Knowing who will be there in advance, as well as maybe having a layout of the show itself, you can seek out the vendors you really want to talk to, and those that arent so important to you. Wear comfortable shoes and leave your coat in the car. Many shows do not offer coat check and it can become quite a burden to lug your coat, your purse, your brochures, and everything else around! This is why you need tosee next item! Bring someone with you! Bring your Mother, a Bridesmaid, and yes, your fianc may even enjoy himself! They can help you with collecting information and would be happy you included them in the planning process! As for your fianc? Just tell him that he can win free stuff and eat free cake! Other than some cake samples, and possibly appetizers, most Bridal Shows will not have food or drink available to purchase. Make sure you eat before you go, and bring a beverage. Dont take too many people with you. Theyll wander off and youll spend all your time trying to keep everyone together instead of focusing on your goals for the day. Bring address labels. I recommend printing out labels on your home computer with your name, address, phone number, email address and wedding date. I also recommend opening a free email account that is designated strictly for all the wedding info you will receive and then cancel them email account after you have booked all of your vendors! You can also rent a P.O. Box to handle all the wedding brochures and mailings you will receive, and then cancel the PO Box when you no longer want the mailings. However, just remember, these vendors will use the information you provide for them if you dont want sales pitch phone calls or mailings, simply do not give out your phone number or address! You may miss a great deal though! Bring the following items: pen, notebook, date book, checkbook, credit card and a large tote bag to carry everything in. Many vendors offer special pricing if you book with them and leave a deposit with them the day of the show. Still not sure if this vendor is truly the one you want? Ask if they would be willing to extend the special price to you for any length of time after the show. Most vendors wont have a problem working with you. If they say no, it makes you wonder why you need to do it RIGHT THERE AND THEN! Say thank you, and pass on by. Maybe it wasnt meant to be. Before you place that deposit, be 100% sure that you have read and agree to all the details on their contract concerning the description of what it is you are signing up for and their policies. What sounds like a great deal wont be so great if you later find out the DJ takes an hour break and your cake doesnt come with a stand! If you plan on attending the Fashion show portion of the day, make sure you arrive at least an hour early. Seating is often first come, first serve, and if youve brought all 12 of your Bridesmaids along, you want to guarantee good seats for everyone! If attending the Fashion Show isnt so important to you, then use that time to visit with the vendors. Since the majority of brides will be watching the show, you will have a better chance to actually talk to a vendor and it will be a much quieter atmosphere. If you are provided with a Bride sticker, dont be embarrassed to wear it! It can become confusing for vendors to identify everyone that attends, and if they know you are the bride, you are more likely to get special treatment! When filling out any contest entries or door prize drawing slips, print clearly! Who would want to miss out on winning a free limo for their wedding because no one could read your phone number? The best place to take notes is on the actual brochure handed out by each vendor. That way you connect a face to your notes, to your brochure, and it will be easier to remember when you make your follow up calls. Most shows will charge a nominal fee for attendance. Make sure you pre-register if the option is available, and dont be too embarrassed to call the company hosting the show to see if they offer any discounts on admission. Enjoy yourself! Its just a bridal show! Nothing HAS to be set in stone that day. Many of the bigger shows will be crowded and noisy dont let this deter you! Use this time to gather information and enjoy any of the special offers extended to you. You are the Bride; you make the rules when dealing with vendors. Its YOUR day, not theirs! Higher Education for Adults

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Sharon White One of the main reasons of the adults take decisions to go to high school is growing demands of highly professional and specific skills at job market. People are willing to get higher salaries and more perspective job positions, they want to choose the job market offers which enlarge their limits if a person has highly-demanded skills. Therefore, more and more adults decide to return to school and obtain extra specific knowledge and high grades. Nowadays more than 50 percent of European adults are studying at different high schools. The oldest student may be at age of 50! Another reason of higher education degrees demand among adults is that modern researches on psychology, physiology and biology have shown that a person should keep learning through the whole life because learning applies grey matter production which in turn stimulates brain power and human physiological age. Thus, the more you learn the younger you get! Nowadays thousands of old people enter colleges and universities in order to feel younger and be informed in modern sciences, technologies and researches. The third important reason of adults great interest in returning to high schools is a financial stability which people often get at the age over 25. Busy and working adults who start getting good salaries can share their income to their higher education which they were not able to obtain at the earlier age because of their families low income. Lack of money at the age of 17 is the core reason of further education refusal. However, if a teenager had a dream to enter high school and get a degree he or she will definitely return to schooling days if he or she is financially stable in a future. Due to adults great interest in higher education many colleges and universities have developed specially designed adults curriculums and schedules which provide adult students with evening and weekend classes. Specially designed curriculum allows adult students obtain all new information necessary for higher degree during evening and weekend lessons. Often adult students study part-time if they are busy with their jobs. However, the most popular way to get higher education for adults is online education. Busy and working adults may start study whenever they want and they are also able to have flexible study schedule. They do not have to waste time for college/university travel and library attendance. Everything they need is available online at college/university website. The article was produced by the writer of masterpapers.com. Should Mom Move Closer?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

By Molly Shomer Things to Think About Before You Relocate Your Elderly Parent Your home is now miles and hours away from your parent. The best thing would be to move Mom or Dad closer…or would it? There are a lot of reasons why it might make sense to relocate an aging parent closer to the rest of the family. But, before you suggest a move, give it some serious thought. Be sure that this move would really be the best thing for all of you. Once you have made the commitment to relocate, it will be next to impossible to undo. Following are some important things to think about before you make the decision to relocate an older person: Can my elder get along without me (at least for a while?) If my elderly parent don’t depend on me for regular assistance now, can the move wait until I have had a chance to learn about local elder resources here? If I am working long hours, how much will I be able to assist my parent after the move? Who will select, pack, or sell possessions? Will a house have to be sold? Social Life Is my elder confident enough to venture out and to make new friends in a strange place? Will s/he be leaving a good network of supportive friends? If my aging parent is driving on familiar streets now, will s/he be able and safe to do so on unfamiliar territory, where the traffic may be much heavier? Is transportation available, or will I have to be the chauffeur? Important Medical Questions Does my elder have a long and close relationship with current physicians? Can we find equivalent physicians who will treat an elderly person? Many specialists, in particular, have reduced or closed their Medicare practices. Will health insurance transfer to this area? HMOs are geographically limited. Will the climate be a concern? Financial Issues Is the new cost of living affordable? Social Security and retirement income will not be adjusted if your parent moves to a place with a higher cost of living. If s/he is currently receiving state benefits or assistance, what will the requirements be to qualify in the new location? Even within the same state, there is often a wait before services resume at a new address. If a house must be sold, what are the financial (tax and other) consequences? And this is the most important question of all…What does the elder think? If he is competent and able to make his own decisions, does he want to relocate? Will you spend hours of effort and anxiety trying to find the perfect answer, only to be told to mind your own business? 2002 Molly Shomer, All Rights Reserved. Scrapbooking Tips And Tricks For Photos And Images

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Nigel Patterson When you’re incorporating pictures of any kind into your scrap book, why not set them off with an unusual finish? This could be an original idea for a border or frame — or an arrangement of several items on the page to add a little drama. Here are a couple of tips that might do well for a children’s album — perhaps a keepsake baby scrapbook, or just a page for a boy or girl. Adding Dimension To Your Photos One good way to add dimension to images is to use double stick foam squares. These are pieces of double stick foam tape that literally allow items to pop out at your reader adding realism to items. This trick is especially useful in children’s art and educational scrapbooks. Simply cut the foam tape into whatever shape and size you want. Then, attach to shape onto your scrapbook page. These 3D foam squares are available from most craft suppliers. Pop Up Windows To Enhance Baby Scrapbooks Everyone who has ever read with children knows how much they love pop-up books. And very young children adore those books in which they ‘lift the flap’ to find what’s hidden in the picture underneath. So why not build some pop up windows into your baby boy or girl scrapbook?! This fun trick allows items to be viewed and then hidden once again. It’s a great technique for educational scrapbooks where text outside the window asks a question and the answer is held inside the window. To make a pop up window, divide a piece of paper into three sections. This paper can either match, complement, or contrast with your background color. Next, paste the middle section of your pop up window to your background. Place your object or photograph on top of this middle section. Then, simply close the window. A nice bow or other embellishment can also be added onto the outside of these windows to add an elegant touch. Lose Weight, Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol with the Show-Me! Diet

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Gabe Mirkin, M.D. If you would like to find out whether you are one of the 80 percent of people who can control high blood pressure or cholesterol with diet alone, have your doctor give you your current numbers. Follow my Show-Me! Diet for just two weeks, then have your doctor re-check your cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. The only foods you eat on the SHOW ME! diet are oatmeal for breakfast, and whole-meal salads for lunch and dinner (see the recipe below). You won’t need to go hungry, because you decide on the portion size. Don’t stuff yourself, but eat until you are comfortably full and satisfied. If you prefer frequent small meals and snacks, that’s fine, too; just divide your salads up and eat as often as you like. You can also have oatmeal at other times of the day if you wish. Breakfast instructions: Use a long-cooking oatmeal (rolled, steel cut, Scottish or Irish style oats.) Do not use quick-cooking or instant types. To save time, cook up a large batch — enough for several days or a week — following the package instructions. Store the leftovers in a refrigerator container, and reheat each day’s portion in a microwave dish. Flavor your oatmeal with a little cinnamon or nutmeg, and add a handful of raisins or other dried fruit to the pot if you wish. You may also add fresh fruit - up to one cup of the fruit of your choice - but eat the fruit with the oatmeal, not alone as a snack. If you like milk on your oatmeal, use skim milk, nonfat yogurt, or a low-fat soy milk or other vegetarian milk. Do not drink it as a beverage; this is for your oatmeal only. Note: If you cannot eat oatmeal for some reason, substitute brown rice or another whole grain, flavored and served the same way as oatmeal. Look for brown rice with at least 3 grams of fiber. Or try Kashi Breakfast Pilaf, a mixture of whole grains that is widely available and delicious. Beverages: For breakfast, lunch, dinner, and anytime in between, beverages must contain NO calories. Use water (plain, flavored, or bubbly; tap water is fine), tea, or any other calorie-free drink you like. Once you have proven to yourself and your doctor that you can control your blood pressure and cholesterol with diet, you’ll need to learn how to apply this way of eating for the rest of your life. Visit my web site for the research behind this program, complete instructions, menus and dozens of recipes to show you that eating this way is not only easy, it’s delicious and satisfying. Mix & Match Salad Recipe Mix & Match Salads are whole meals in a salad bowl. Start with any lettuce or salad greens you like, and add ANY other vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and other foods from the list below. Try to get several different bright colors in the bowl, including something red, orange or yellow. Here’s just one example: 2 Romaine lettuce hearts, sliced crosswise into 1/2″ strips 1 10-ounce box grape (tiny) tomatoes 1 6-ounce jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained 1 ripe avocado, cut in 1/2″ chunks 1 red bell pepper, cut in 1/4″ strips 1 3-ounce can red salmon 1/4 cup shredded Romano or Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon Cajun spice blend, or to taste 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or light wine vinegar Toss all ingredients together in a salad bowl and serve. 2-3 servings That’s just one of endless possible combinations. Start with 3-4 cups of salad greens per person. Then add whatever amount you wish of vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruits, spices and seasonings You can also add limited amounts of the following: Seafood maximum of 6 ounces (2 3-ounce servings) per day Cheese 1 ounce of dry (low-fat) cheese, counts as a dairy serving, maximum 3 per day Nuts & Seeds maximum of 1/4 cup (2 2-tablespoon servings) per day Oils - Up to 1 tablespoon of olive oil in your dressing if you like, or use your favorite low-calorie bottled dressing Use your Mix & Match Salads twice a day on the Show-Me! Diet, or any time you want an easy, healthful meal. Subscribe to my FREE weekly newsletter on fitness, health, and nutrition. The Rehearsal Dinner

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

By Nada Arnot The rehearsal dinner is a time to bring your entire wedding party, your parents and your future in-laws together for a relaxing evening before the big day. Not only is in opportunity to thank them for all their support throughout the wedding planning process, but its also a great way to unwind. That said, it is often better to organize a low-key, casual dinner where guests can sit around in jeans and t-shirts than to plan something formal. If you decide to have a more casual affair, you may decide to order pizza, Subway or to organize a potluck. The objective is to keep things comfortable for the guests, to reduce costs and to make the affair as easy to organize as possible. You will have enough worries, so dont try to make this a gala event. Here are a few additional points you should consider when planning the rehearsal dinner: Costs Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is hosted and paid for by the grooms parents. However, it is quite common for the couple to plan the shindig and cover the bill, so focus on bringing your closest friends and family together rather than throwing a huge party i.e., be economical. Time When scheduling the date and time of the rehearsal dinner, keep in mind that the rehearsal dinner is held immediately after the wedding rehearsal. You should also know that the wedding rehearsal is about a half-hour long and is usually held the night before the wedding day. Guests Remember to invite everyone who was at the rehearsal, including the clergyman and significant others (e.g., boyfriends, girlfriends and spouses). Parents of any children in the wedding party should also be invited. Depending on budget constraints, you may also wish to extend an invitation to relatives who came from out-of-town to attend your wedding. Now that weve covered the fundamental of the rehearsal dinner, its time for you to start planning. Use the http://www.groomgroove.com Rehearsal Dinner Checklist to make sure that you cover all your dinner planning tasks and stay on schedule. Enjoy, relax and have fun! How to Avoid Bulking Up

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne I want to lose weight but I don’t want to bulk up. I hear that, and I’m sure you do to, from many women that strength train. I even hear it from some men. Now for arguments sake, let’s just say that this is a valid concern (so we’ll totally ignore for the time being that in order to bulk up you must eat a lot, and I mean a lot of food, and that it is relatively difficult for women to “bulk” up anyway). So how should females (and males) train so that the risk of bulking up is minimal? Easy. There are 2 ways to modify a woman’s workout so that she need not fear the bulk. 1) Reduce the volume of weight training. Do only one work set instead of 3. So if it says 3 sets of 8, do only 1 set of 8. This will still put your body in some turbulence, allowing you to burn calories during and after exercise, as well as improving your strength and bone mineral density. Gaining mass is a function of intensity and volume. So if a woman reduces the volume, but keeps the intensity, she will get all the strength benefits and a lot of the metabolism boosting benefits without the paranoia of getting bulky. 2) Train your clients with more bodyweight exercises. And I’m not just talking about lunges. There are many bodyweight exercises that will help women lose fat and get lean so that they put and keep the curves in all the right places. Lunges, split squats, pushups, decline pushups, mountain climbers, inverted rows, assisted chinups, single-leg squats, 1-leg deadlifts, and many, many more. And of course, throughout all of this, make sure that your nutrition matches your goals. Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and writes for Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Oxygen magazines. His trademarked Turbulence Training fat loss workouts have been featured multiple times in Mens Fitness and Maximum Fitness magazines and all over the Internet, and have helped thousands of men and women around the world lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean in less than 45 minutes three times per week. East Meets West Through Buddhist Institute

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

By Anne Reilly The existence of a Buddhist organization in an Eastern European country may seem surprising. But Buddhism has come of age in the secularized West. Its reach is expanding beyond its original Eastern context and Hungarys East-West Research Institute is bringing this worldview to the rest of the globe. Although Hungarian culture is largely influenced and informed by Christian values and perspectives, many Hungarians have a traditional interest in Eastern cultures, because they are thought to have come from Inner Asia, said Tamas Agocs, director of the institute. This may be why the only state-accredited Buddhist institute of higher education in Europe, the Gate of the Dharma Buddhist University, was founded in Budapest in 1991. The university subsequently established the East-West Research Institute to provide framework and conditions for scientific research into the possibilities of Buddhist education and the dissemination and application of Buddhist principles in the country, said Agocs. As globalization continues to make the world smaller, participants strive to increase the dialogue between the East the Asian cultures that have been shaped by Buddhist thought and the West the modern, scientific cultures that originated in Western Europe. With this goal in mind, they also work towards making the values of Buddhism known in the West. Without forsaking the integrity of Buddhist views, values and practices, Agocs said their goal is to enter the East-West dialogue not just in order to find interesting parallels and differences between Eastern and Western discourses, but with a view towards the constructive and creative application of Buddhist principles in all walks of life. According to Agocs, the open attitude of Buddhist thought is the ideal starting point for furthering the science-and-religion discussion. Buddhism shares many methods with Western science. They both emphasize the unbiased examination, thoughtful analysis and critical testing of experience, said Agocs. However, the direction of the approach is different, he said. The basic difference is that Buddhist inquiry is directed mainly inwards, towards the consciousness, while scientific research is mostly targeted outside. In addition to participating in the science-and-religion dialogue and organizing conferences on the intersection between the East and the West, the institute promotes research on the study of the Buddhist tradition and explores Buddhism as an applied science that can provide answers to challenges faced in the world today. Current programs include the Milky Way project, which is establishing a Buddhist school. The institute is also sponsoring research on the mind and the application of Buddhist mind training methods to psychology and community building. Eventually, Agocs said he would like to build cooperative relationships between the center and other international organizations for interdisciplinary research projects.
