I looked at her in disgust. I realized I had created a monster. Let me explain. I had encouraged Sue to go back to school. The kids were entering middle school, she was bored with car pooling, and we also could use the extra money. I told her not to limit herself to speech therapy, her profession before having children. I suggested she see a career psychologist. To my surprise, she scored very well in finance. I think it related to her compulsiveness for details. Then, as always, luck played its part. The business school was under pressure to bring more women over the age of 40 into its mid-career MBA program. Sue applied, was accepted, and a year later she had an MBA (and I am proud to say she finished in the top 10 percent of her class). But then she crossed the line. Sue started getting involved in my business. We always had a non-verbal agreement. She stayed out of my business, other then answering the phones when my secretary took a three-month maternity leave. And I stayed out of her gourmet kitchen. She hated all those husbands who thought they could star in their own cooking shows on cable TV. And yet, she just could not let this one issue pass her by. I thought I had found manna from God again. I was ready to bet all of this years profits on the acquisition of my competitors inventory. The guy was liquidating his company after 20 years in business. Sue saw this as a sign that future growth was improbable. I, on the other hand, saw it as an opportunity to buy low, sell high, and pocket a hefty profit. She reminded me of some of my other purchases that were real dogs. I counter punched, reminding her of the one killing I had made; that deal had paid off the mortgage on our condo at the beach. Sue continued to pepper me with questions about projected sales, potential competition from China, warehousing costs, and rising interest rates. All the while she was putting the numbers into a spreadsheet on her laptop. She flipped it around, and showed me the results. Her projections showed that I had miscalculated. She thought I would be so proud of her work. Instead, I stormed out. She followed me upstairs. Dont clam up, she yelled. Remember what Walter (our marriage counselor) told you. Stop distancing yourself. Tell me what you really feel. Say it to me right now. OK, I blurted out. Stay out of my business. When I started, I had no help. I did it all by myself. Sure, I made mistakes, but I just kept on working harder. Now you want to get involved, use all your MBA smarts to improve the business? And who will get all the credit? You. She continued her ranting My God, I married you because I thought you really respected me as an equal. Now I realize you are jealous. Youre just like your friends. Youre afraid I am smarter than you; and you cant deal with it. Just as quickly she calmed down and asked, Honey, how can we fix this problem? I love you too much to let this get between us. By Camelia Fredericks I once went on a first (and last) date with a guy who broke the ice by telling me that he had been married three times, kept getting hurt and used by all, and was still living with his ex! There was moresomething about a scheme to ensure that he gets the whole matrimonial property but I was hardly listening by that point. All I could think was: Why are you telling me this?! Dating donts are things you should never do or say on a date. When the other person exhibits these dont, the sappy love soundtrack in your head goes zzzzz and the line on your heart monitor goes flat! Most of us know what you should never say on a first date. Words like still in love with my ex jump to mind. But what about the more subtle subjects youre best not touching with a yardstick? Here are some donts so deadly its guaranteed there wont be a date number two. 1. Your romantic past Never ever bring up your former flame! I remember going out on date once and whilst we were driving to the restaurant, he turned the music onsang aloud to it whilst he had tears in his eyes. About 2 minutes later, I realised that the songs were all romantic ballads and the lyrics were all about a man crying out for his lost love!!! I suggested we go for a quick drink instead and gulped down 2 gin and tonics and made the quickest exit I had ever made before. Moral of the story iswe do not want to hear about what went wrong in your past relationships (at least not on the first date), how your ex was the sexiest, most devoted or loving woman ever, what her favourite drink was or how she was always punctual for a date! If it’s a blind date, DON’T compare yourself to anyone famous Now we all know this never works the way we’d like it to. Sure, most of us have someone famous we’re compared to. With me, it’s usually Iman meets Jackie Brown. I can live with that. But personality-wise, apparently I’m Monica from Friends, Eva from Desperate Housewives and Samantha from Sex and the City all rolled into one! Those comparisons are obviously wrong…Ha! My point? Most people look like a more slightly distorted version of these famous stars. I have never met anyone who really looked like the fabulous celebrity they said they looked like. So proceed with caution. Unless, of course, you are drop dead gorgeous, then you can say the famous ones look like you… 2. DON’T check out other people! Ah, nothing is more that a turn-off than to be out on a date with someone and notice him checking out the girl with the cleavage right in front of your face or notice her checking that man with the most gorgeous tightest butt youve ever seen! It might not happen often, and it’s usually another sign of insecurity, but if it does, I usually try to have a comment handy, maybe something like “you know, if you hurry, you can get that girl to hold the bucket of drool that’s accumulating as we speak. Go ahead, I’ll wait…” Please please please dont ever check someone else out when youre on date as it really is an instant turn off, unless of course, you want to do just that! 3. DONT ask them what they think of you For gosh sakes! Have some confidence! Read the signals. You will know if they are repulsed by you or attracted to you. I once had a date with a man that I had been communicating with over the phone for some time. I really liked the person he was over the phone. About 5 minutes into our first face-to-face date, he asked me if I was disappointed. At the time, I turned to him, put my hand behind his head, pulled him close enough to kiss and purred in his ear Dont ask me that again!”. Had he had any clue or any confidence he would have read that very clear sign and had a chance at a second date. However, during the rest of the evening, he asked me that same question about a half dozen more times. This extreme lack of confidence made him much less attractive to me. So he stayed in the friends category (you know, the one men hate when there is no chance of sex). So men and women, dont forget, one of the most attractive qualities is confidence without arrogance. 4. DONT have sex on the first date! If he /she asks you back to their place for coffee, he/she wants to have sex (or something close). If she really fancies one last glass of pink bubbly, she should suggest a late-night bar. Likewise, if he suggests a Chinese takeaway back at his when you have to pass three Mr. Lees to get there, he wants ecstasy with his sweet and sour pork balls! You know, the older I get, the more traditional I become. Yeah, I know, it’s a sign of old age (just a bit!) but I’ve made a few mistakes, and this one I just have to stand by. The thing is, I think this rule bothers men far more than women. Guys, if we like you a lot, and we see promise, we’re going to lean towards wanting to sleep with you at some point. It doesn’t mean we’ve had sexual relations with the entire England football team! The fact that men seem uncomfortable with sleeping with a potential Ms. Right on the first date is something I don’t question, that’s just the way it is. It’s always better to savour anticipation! By Jinger Jarrett Yesterday while in the local drugstore I had the opportunity to meet someone with Tourette’s Syndrome. Tourette’s Syndrome is a rare condition where an individual cannot always control his/her actions and movement. It can be mind jarring to meet someone with this condition because one minute he/she may seem perfectly normal and the next the person is screaming and saying things that make no sense. This woman seemed perfectly normal until she started screaming “Fire, Fire, Someone Help Me!”. When she walked by me, she explained her condition to me and apologized. Never in my entire life, except during the deaths of my granddaughter and grandson, have I felt so deeply compassionate towards another person. I felt my heart break in that moment because of this woman’s suffering. I felt so bad for her, and what’s worse, I really didn’t know what to say except that it was OK, she had nothing to apologize for. After she left, it really made me think. I don’t always understand why God does what He does, or why He allows the things to happen that He allows. Nothing in this world, or the next, can happen without His say so (Don’t believe me? Read the book of Job). What I do know is that there is absolutely nothing random about God. He’s in control. Everything that happens happens because He allows it, and He has good reasons although we may not understand his reasoning. What I also know is that this woman, and each of us, is made in God’s image. We are something special. No other creature in heaven or on earth can claim this privilege but human beings. God doesn’t make junk. Everything He makes is extraordinary and special. What this woman taught me is this: we should never apologize for who and what we are. We are something special. Yes, all of us make mistakes. Sometimes we take what God has created and make it something preverted, evil, or wrong. The core of who we are though, comes from God, and that is never wrong. There are many people who are hurting today. They need our love. The Bible teaches us that the greatest commandment is to love God and love others as we love ourselves. The Bible also says that love covers a multitude of sins. The greatest gift we can offer others is to love them. Loving them isn’t about who, or what, they are. It’s about who we are. By learning to love ourselves, and then loving others, we become better. We become more of who we were meant to become. Love is the only thing that ever changed the world in a positive way.
